Requiem For A Friend

In the midst of a pandemic, riots break out. In the midst of the chaos, an old school friend dies. Not from Covid but from cancer, made more poignant as her son only had his 16th birthday recently and is being comforted by his elder sister. Her own three sisters, a brother and a mother also grieve; the latter never believing that she would ever have to bury her child.

Because of the current Covid situation, it is a family only occasion. No flowers, no celebration of life, just a sparse, empty place, which (if things were normal) would have been filled with people paying their last respects; their presence a comfort to her family. That is the rub, the grinding of gears - people cannot live or die normally and, especially in death their families find it hard to process their loss in a personal and appropriate way. Tomorrow, I will light a candle and give thanks for the friendship we had. It's the best I can do. It's the ONLY thing I can do...
