40. How do you define beauty?
Whether it is a human, animal or place, I would refer to the literary meaning of 'sublime', as defined by Longinus as '"excellence in language," the "expression of a great spirit" and the power to provoke "ecstasy."' As beautiful and as terrifying as a mountain, for instance. Or in the face of fire. I saw a box jellyfish once - freakishly beautiful, but deadly. Human beauty is subjective, though. It is not in good looks alone (though I think a lot of the human race will tend to distill and categorise their idea of human beauty). It is a group of characteristics that are fleetingly glimpsed.
